The September Seasonal Lineup at Vivid Minds Cafe
There is a specific kind of Denver morning that shows up sometime in September. The patio at Vivid Minds Cafe still has that early sun on it. But the air has a little bite by the time you sit down. It is not quite sweater weather yet. It is thinking about it. That is the morning our seasonal menu is built for. We spent the last several weeks testing syrups, purées, and cold foam ratios until four drinks felt right.
Starting now, the Flights and Seasonal section of our menu carries four new drinks. They are the Orange Vanilla Mocha, the Banana Maple Latte, the Fluffer Nutter, and the Tokyo Fog. Three of them come in espresso, chai, or matcha. That makes this less a list of four drinks and more a small library of combinations. We will explain that further down. First, the drinks themselves.
All four cost $8.00. You can order them now at 1545 S Broadway, seven days a week, from 7:30am to 6pm.
Orange Vanilla Mocha
Espresso, choice of milk, dark chocolate syrup, vanilla cold foam.
Chocolate and orange shows up in December baking, then mostly disappears for eleven months. That never made much sense to us. The Orange Vanilla Mocha brings the pairing back as a coffee drink instead of a dessert. It starts the way any good mocha does: espresso and dark chocolate syrup. That keeps it rich and a little bitter rather than candy sweet. The orange comes through the vanilla cold foam on top. We do not stir it in. That way, your first sip is bright citrus and vanilla, and the drink underneath is dark chocolate and espresso. It layers instead of blending, and it changes a little from the top of the cup to the bottom. That is part of the fun of it.
You can also order the Orange Vanilla Mocha on chai or ceremonial matcha instead of espresso. The chai version pulls the spice forward against the chocolate and orange. It lands closer to a spiced holiday drink than a coffeehouse mocha. The matcha version is the most unexpected of the three. Matcha’s grassy, slightly bitter backbone plays surprisingly well against dark chocolate. The orange in the cold foam keeps the whole thing from tasting too vegetal. If you like your fall drinks a little less traditional, start there.
Banana Maple Latte
Espresso, choice of milk, housemade banana purée, maple cold foam.
This is the drink we got the most questions about during testing. Mostly some version of “banana in a latte, really?” Yes, really. Here is why it works. We make the banana purée in house rather than pulling it from a bottle. It tastes like actual ripe banana, not banana flavoring. We use it with a light hand. It adds roundness to the espresso instead of turning the whole drink into a smoothie. Maple takes the place of a standard sweetener in the cold foam. Together, the two land somewhere close to banana bread, if banana bread were a latte instead of a loaf.
This one also comes in chai and matcha versions. Banana and chai spice make a genuinely good combination, closer to a spiced banana bread than the espresso version. On matcha, the banana purée softens matcha’s usual sharp edge. If you have found straight matcha lattes too intense before, this is a good option.
Ask for it iced if the morning calls for it. The banana purée and maple cold foam both hold up well over ice. The maple foam even gets a nice texture once it sets on top.
Fluffer Nutter
Espresso, choice of milk, peanut butter syrup, toasted marshmallow.
We named it for the sandwich, and built it for people who never really grew out of wanting the sandwich. The Fluffer Nutter starts with peanut butter syrup stirred through espresso and milk. That gives it a nutty, slightly savory backbone rather than a straight sugar rush. The toasted marshmallow on top is the whole point of the drink. We finish it with real heat. You get the aroma and the light char of an actually toasted marshmallow, not a marshmallow-flavored syrup standing in for the real thing.
The Fluffer Nutter also comes on chai or ceremonial matcha. On chai, the warm spice and the peanut butter play well together. The toasted marshmallow keeps it from tipping into overly heavy. On matcha, the toasted marshmallow and peanut butter cut through matcha’s bitterness. That makes this one of the more dessert-leaning drinks on the whole menu, seasonal or otherwise. If you have a sweet tooth and a soft spot for childhood snacks, start here.
One practical note: we toast the marshmallow to order. That means the Fluffer Nutter takes a little longer to come out than the rest of the seasonal lineup. It is worth the wait, but consider yourself warned if you are in a hurry.
Tokyo Fog
Ceremonial matcha, choice of milk, earl grey cold foam.
The Tokyo Fog is the one drink on this list that does not come three ways. It does not need to. It takes our ceremonial grade, stone-ground matcha. Then we pair it with an earl grey cold foam instead of a standard milk foam. Earl grey’s bergamot note sits close to matcha’s own vegetal, slightly floral profile. The two read as a single idea rather than two competing teas. It comes across a little like a London Fog that swapped its black tea base for matcha, hence the name.
If you have had our matcha before and liked it, the Tokyo Fog is an easy next order. If matcha has never quite clicked for you, the earl grey cold foam softens the edges. Give it another shot here before you write matcha off for the season.
Why three of these come in three versions
Espresso, chai, and matcha are three very different bases. Most cafes make you pick a lane. This drink is a coffee drink. That one is a chai drink. And if you want matcha, you get whatever the one matcha option happens to be. We built the Orange Vanilla Mocha, Banana Maple Latte, and Fluffer Nutter differently on purpose. We developed the syrup, purée, or topping in each drink to work with all three bases. That keeps the flavor recognizable no matter which one you order. The base is what changes the whole personality of the drink underneath it.
That matters for a simple, practical reason: not everyone in your group drinks the same thing. Maybe one person wants their usual espresso drink. Another only orders chai. A third has switched to matcha and does not want to switch back. All three of you can still order the same seasonal flavor. Each of you gets the version that fits how you actually drink coffee. It also means if you try the Fluffer Nutter on espresso and love it, you still have two more ways to try it before the season ends.
Seasonal means seasonal
These four drinks live in the Flights and Seasonal section of the menu for a reason. They are here for a season, not indefinitely. Maybe the orange and chocolate combination in the mocha catches your eye. Maybe it is the banana bread quality of the latte. Maybe it is the toasted marshmallow on the Fluffer Nutter, or the earl grey and matcha pairing in the Tokyo Fog. Whichever one it is, build a habit around it now. Do not assume it will still be on the menu in a few months. Once the season turns, so does the lineup.
If you always order the same drink, give one of these four a try while they last. If you liked one of the three flexible drinks on espresso, come back. Try it on chai or matcha before the season is over. Same flavor, different personality.
Come try them
All four seasonal drinks are on the menu now, and they are worth the trip on their own. They are also a good excuse to use the 1,200 square foot patio while the weather still allows it. Bring your dog, bring your laptop, or just bring yourself. Sit outside with a Fluffer Nutter for a while before the Denver weather changes its mind. We are open daily from 7:30am to 6pm at 1545 S Broadway. You can always find the full lineup, seasonal drinks included, on our menu page.
Try one of the alternate bases on any of the three flexible drinks? We would genuinely like to know which combination becomes your favorite. Tag us on Instagram or TikTok @vividmindscafe and tell us what you ordered. We read every one.
